I’m always looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint.

As a translator, one of the easiest wins is to pick your clients. I therefore won't accept projects from companies in the oil & gas, aviation, and other highly polluting sectors.

I also conduct office audits to calculate my yearly CO2 equivalent. These figures help me to make an informed decision about where to focus my carbon-cutting efforts. My grand total for 2025 came to 765.39 kg CO2, a reduction of 29.88 kg from 2023.

Office supplies & postage

My office is almost entirely paperless and I print infrequently – only for certified translations, which I post via Royal Mail. A printer cartridge and a pack of 80 sheets lasts up to 6 months.

Office equipment

182 kg CO2e

I'm averaging 1 computer every 4 years and 1 office chair every 7 years. As a virtual worker, there's not much else to this category!

Internet, emails & website

374.04 kg CO2e

While my phone & email use is pleasingly low (an average of 3 emails a day) I conduct a lot of web searches. In future, I'm hoping to use Ecosia for work-related research, but currently its results don’t cut the mustard.

CPD and travel

0.3 kg CO2e

Since I work from home, I produce zero emissions for commuting. Most of the training I do is in the form of webinars or online workshops, so the emissions are for video streaming rather than travel.

Heating & electricity

56.23 kg CO2e

I use a green electricity tariff and have an extremely well-insulated house. My 3-year-old heat pump and solar panels are gradually bringing down emissions in this category.

Finance & insurance

88.57 kg CO2e

This covers banking, professional indemnity insurance and accounting services. My bank is already one of the greenest available and so this category doesn't change very much.
